Several weeks ago, a friend from high school approached me about designing some art for his band. He, his sister, and their friend have started an experimental electronic band and needed art for singles and an EP, as well as some videos. I was super excited about the possibility of helping create a visual identity for such a unique new band.
My journey with Hazel began with a little competition called the NPR Tiny Desk Contest. The NPR Tiny Desk concerts are ultra lowkey musical sessions centered around--you guessed it--a tiny desk. The contest will result in one new unsigned band receiving a tour and a real Tiny Desk session of their own. The video for "Head Full of Diamonds" was incredibly fun to film, and the song is absolutely beautiful (and crazy catchy, trust me).
The next step in our adventure was designing art for the first official single, "I Met a Boy." This is the first single from Hazel's EP Wild Animals, which is set to release later this spring.
I tore through ideas, trying to find something that matched Hazel's eclectic sound. We decided to go with watercolor. The EP tells the story of a girl who falls for a boy, only to realize she may have gotten in deeper than she knew.
Hazel's overall "look" (including their rad costumes that have yet to be revealed) is very earthy and mystical. I tried to capture that in the colors, strokes, and imagery of the pieces.
With each revision the art became more refined and closed to what the band and I were looking for.
Once we settled on art for the single, we set up an interview-style short video to introduce the band and announce the release of the single. Hazel is made up of Eli Cruise (inventive lyricist and synths), Cale Bramer (skilled drummer and synths), and Hannah Cruise (incredible lead vocals). Watch the video to learn more about how Hazel originated.
And finally, the release day has arrived!
Since the members of Hazel first approached me about creating art for them, they have quickly become some of my best friends. I'm so proud and incredibly excited to share my dear friends' hard work. I'm honored to have been a part of their artistic process. Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the musical artistry of Hazel!
